Patriots: A Novel of Surviving the Coming Collapse

Patriots: A Novel of Surviving the Coming Collapse

I have to give thanks to my brother for another great book review.  I’ve also read this book but was introduced to it from another source.  Among prepping circles this will typically be among the top recommended books.  Personally I think the story telling is good but not superb; but the information and other literature […]

Wild Berries Of Idaho (Part two)

Wild Berries Of Idaho (Part two)

In a continuation of an earlier article my mother has been kind enough to provide a part two.  I hope you enjoy.  My mother tapered off the full number of huckleberry recipes, but if you want them put a note in the bottom and I’ll get her in contact with you.  We have an abundance […]

The Hobbit House

The Hobbit House

I read this some time ago and found it quite fascinating.  Not only did this family combine the beauty of nature with practicality; but they did it cheap.  Check out the website and look at some of the modifications they made to keep the home as efficient as possible and to minimize their footprint on […]

Pine Nuts

Pine Nuts

We didn’t get these very often growing up because we didn’t know how to harvest them, and I think my parents were unfamiliar with these nuts.  I’ve since developed quite a taste for them that drew my curiosity into what trees they come from and how to harvest them and how are they harvested.  There […]

Slipform Stonemasonry

Slipform Stonemasonry

Some quick history: “Slipform stone masonry was developed by New York architect Ernest Flagg in 1920. Flagg built a vertical framework as tall as the wall, then inserted 2×6 or 2×8 planks as forms to guide the stonework. When the masonry work reached the top of a plank, Flagg inserted another one, adding more planks […]

Warm Wet Wool

Warm Wet Wool

I got turned onto wool for outdoor socks from what my brothers had told me and what I learned studying the Vikings.  For thousands of years wool has been used by people for socks, pants, and leg wraps.  Today, many of our best survival socks are total or part wool blends.  One of the reasons […]

Potatoes

Potatoes

I was reflecting on my youth and time in Bear Lake Idaho the other day and looked back on the Danish tradition of eating potatoes.  Potatoes to a Dane are like rice to a Pilipino; The Danes can’t live without them.  Their preference is boiled with a rich dark brown gravy.  Believe it or not, […]

Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Rockies

Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Rockies

My brother wrote me a fine book review on this piece of literature.  I’ve glanced at this book in the past, as my brother was staying here and we had a habit of unpacking and repacking our bug-out-bags when we got bored, and this book was always packed in a handily retrievable location.  I’ve added […]

Jerky (and pemmican)

Jerky (and pemmican)

I don’t know if this was real or just some rumor that circulated; but, in my youth I recall hearing a story about an unspecified type of jerky that was found in sealed containers at an American Indian archeological site in the desert of the four corners region.  In other words, a perfect environment for […]

Aspen as Aspirin?

Aspen as Aspirin?

My youngest sister tells me that once while camping or playing in the woods with the other kids she had a headache, and I apparently made her chew on aspen leaves as a remedy.  I don’t remember this but it sounds like me; and it sounds even more like something I would have heard from […]

Jonathan Prusse

I’m a guy who cares about his family. I want to make sure that those I love have the tools necessary to survive. In my own life I’ve seen the benefits which food storage and self-sufficiency have provided for my own immediate family during times of financial strain. Most of my own experience comes down to farm life, foraging in the woods, scouting, military service and combat deployments; to name several of life’s major building blocks. Not only do I want to share, I want to learn; so give me your insight. And while I do my best to ensure all information is correct; let me know if any corrections need to be made.
