Edible Reptiles

Edible Reptiles

My first exposure to eating reptiles occurred in the Philippines where I lived for two years in a primarily rural region. The taste of the different types of lizards was great, and when cooked right, the meat is nice and flaky. Reptiles are tetrapod vertebrates, creatures that either have four limbs or, like snakes, are […]

Eating Grass

Eating Grass

Surprising to many is the fact that you can eat grass. Despite there being hundreds of varieties of bladed grass found in the Americas, almost all (99% of them) can be eaten. This ranges from wheat, oats, and bamboo to the wild meadow varieties. The downside is that the large proportion of common and wild […]

Marine Corp Survival Manuel

At the request of a good friend I am sharing the PDF for the FM 21-76/MCRP 3-02F, commonly known as the Marine Corp Survival Manuel. This is a document worth down loading and printing. The version here is from 1992, but still very applicable, as the tools to survival remain constant. Jon US Marine Corps […]

North American Ticks

Of the many different tick species found throughout the world, only a select few bite and transmit disease to humans. These maps provide general insight into the expected distribution these human-biting ticks in the contiguous United States. Populations of ticks may be found outside noted areas. Naturally occurring populations of the ticks described below do […]

Prickly Lettuce

Lactuca serriola, also called prickly lettuce, milk thistle (not to be confused with Silybum marianum, also called milk thistle) compass plant, and scarole, is an annual or biennial plant, slightly foetid, that is commonly considered a weed of orchards, roadsides and field crops. The leaves grow along a spiny stem and get progressively smaller as […]

Chicken of the Trees

Let me start by sharing a portion of an article and interview from munchies.vice.com entitled We Should Think About Eating Squirrel: Gray squirrels are everywhere. They’re in the bins in your local park, stuffing discarded sandwich crusts into their mouths. They’re in your garden, burying nuts in your lawn and pissing off your cats. They’re […]

Layer Up

If you are affiliated with the military, especially the army, then you know we’ve drifted away from the classic field jacket and liner to the new multi-layer (feels like 15) cold weather system. And there are some guys out there don’t know why it is advantageous to wear layers verses a big single massive jacket. […]

Plantain

Plantain

Plantain (Plantago major, white man’s foot) is another one of those plants that seems to thrive right on the edge of gardens and driveways, but it’s also edible. Pick the green, rippled leaves and leave the tall flower stems. Blanch the leaves and sauté with some butter and garlic just as you would with kale […]

Jonathan Prusse

I’m a guy who cares about his family. I want to make sure that those I love have the tools necessary to survive. In my own life I’ve seen the benefits which food storage and self-sufficiency have provided for my own immediate family during times of financial strain. Most of my own experience comes down to farm life, foraging in the woods, scouting, military service and combat deployments; to name several of life’s major building blocks. Not only do I want to share, I want to learn; so give me your insight. And while I do my best to ensure all information is correct; let me know if any corrections need to be made.
