Watercress

Watercress

In my youth I remember taking of my shoes and socks and rolling up my pants so I could walk out into the icy spring water up a Rocky Mountain canyon just to pick this leafy green little vegetable.  It was so abundant that a few handfuls could fill garbage bags in seconds.  I don’t […]

Signal Rescue Aircraft

Pulled these out of the FM 21-60 Chapter 5: Signals to Aircraft.  These are internationally recognized signals that can be used with both fixed and rotary wing aircraft (planes and helicopters).  Print these out and learn them if you have a few; the most likely symbol you will use in the civilian world will be […]

Cattails

One of the most useful and plentiful plants for foraging or survival situations are cattails. As a food plant, cattails are an outstanding emergency food source and offer a variety of food products according to the season.  Nothing produces more starch per acre under cultivation than cattails, even outperforming potatoes, with more than 6,000 pounds […]

The Dandelion

A Brief History of Dandelions Believe it or not, this plant was not always thought of as a weed. It used to be referred to as a “common herb” and was used for both medicinal properties, a welcome food supplement in the spring, and among the wealthy in later years it was regarded as a […]

Fish Spear

Okay, so I’ve tried this.  I really haven’t had much success or luck with this, especially compared to a classic pole and line; but if you are desperate with no other resources available, or you’re bored, have some fun and give it a try.  This is a method for employing when the water is waist […]

Crayfish, Crawfish, and Crawdads

Crayfish, Crawfish, and Crawdads

I watched an outdoor fishing and hunting show the other day and some amusing material caught my eye.  The show depicted snorkelers in wet suites baiting the bed of a small reservoir in Idaho and then catching them.  They would dive down as deep as reasonable and then come up with 2 or three at […]

Deadfall Trap

Deadfall Trap

My daughters opted to give me a hand setting this trap under the couch.  The size here is quite exaggerated as this trip is typically used for rabbit size and under.  I’ve used this in the woods with mixed results; here are the lessons I’ve learned: The bait has to be firmly attached to the […]

In Cold Water

In Cold Water

Read this in a book and determined some excerpts were well worth sharing. “First and foremost, he (Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht) wants to dispatch the belief that hypothermia kills quickly. ‘If you think you have just minutes to life, that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy,’ he explains. ‘If you decide you’re going to die, you tend to […]

GPS Down?

GPS Down?

Attached is a story that a colleague of mine shared a while ago.  While compass work and land navigation may seem out dated it can make a difference.  This incident may not have turned life threatening, but it could have been serious and is a wonderful illustration of putting a perishable skill to good use. […]

Jonathan Prusse

I’m a guy who cares about his family. I want to make sure that those I love have the tools necessary to survive. In my own life I’ve seen the benefits which food storage and self-sufficiency have provided for my own immediate family during times of financial strain. Most of my own experience comes down to farm life, foraging in the woods, scouting, military service and combat deployments; to name several of life’s major building blocks. Not only do I want to share, I want to learn; so give me your insight. And while I do my best to ensure all information is correct; let me know if any corrections need to be made.
